musyc: Illustrated black cat on stack of colorful books (Reading: Cat on stack)
[personal profile] musyc
Final update on Mr Holmes! He has been officially adopted! His foster mom fell in love with him basically on sight and she and her partner have given Mr Holmes a forever home. I am so grateful that he found a loving family and a comfortable life for the rest of his years.

Picture book readings:
Home is a Wish - Julia Kuo, author and illustrator
Dealing with a big move to a new home, and the worries that come with that. Cute but not memorable. 5/10

A Cat Like That - Lester L. Laminack, author; Nicole Wong, illustrator
A chubby cat and his wanderings around his town. Illustrations were a bit off for me, but I did like the little map that showed the cat's movements. 5/10

Pavlo Gets the Grumps - Natalia Shaloshvili, author and illustrator
Pavlo is a grumpy kid/kitten that doesn't want to play. Mom and friends help with his big feelings. Okay, but nothing special. 5/10

Midnight Motorbike - Maureen Shay Tajsar, author; Ishita Jain, illustrator
I liked the story and setting of this - Amma and daughter take a motorcycle ride through India at night when it's too hot to sleep - but the illustrations were very muddled. Lovely story, not a joy to look at. 4/10

We Are Lion Dancers - Benson Shum, author and illustrator
Lovely book about children watching lion dancers and learning how to do the dance themselves. 7/10

Scamp - Anden Wilder, author and illustrator
Cute story about a little girl who is almost more cat-like than her cat. 7/10

Another Word for Neighbor - Angela Pham Krans, author; Thai My Phuong, illustrator
Gorgeously written, excellent vocabulary, lovely illustrations. This was a winner of a book, where a new family with two kids moves next to an older man who just wants quiet. They make friends and they make pho! 9/10, would definitely buy.

Safe Crossing - Kari Percival, author and illustrator
This was adorable. Environmental education and citizen outreach, plus a diverse set of characters. There is a touch of a sad moment when the unfortunate realities of salamanders and frogs crossing a road gets explained but it's not huge, and treated with compassion. 9/10, would absolutely buy.

Reading goal #9!
Ben Aaronovitch - Masquerades of Spring
If you had set me down and said this is Aaronovitch's Yuletide fic, I would not have been in the slightest bit surprised. This read like a Folly-based Jeeves and Wooster AU, which is not a criticism! It was a frothy book, very enjoyable and fun. 8/10

DNF: Manda Collins - Lady's Guide to Mischief and Mayhem. Five chapters in and I kept picking something else to read, so back it went!

Currently checked out:
Boyd and Beth Morrison, Lawless Land
Evie Woods, Lost Bookshop

(This is a test of the Emergency Alert System daily posting.)

I hit Walmart and Price Chopper while I was downtown yesterday. (The Walmart stop was to get a different wrist brace to try as the one I purchased previously I think would work better while I’m actually using my laptop rather than sleeping.) I hit Stewart’s (for gas and milk) and the library (to return a book) on the way home.

I did two loads of laundry, a load in the dishwasher, and paid a bill online. I baked chicken for the dogs' meals and made corned beef for supper. (It was awful. The corn beef tasted odd – enough that Pip was okay with me tossing the leftovers because he didn’t want to eat any more of it – and even the boiled potatoes went funky. The potato came off the skin and turned to mush, basically. I have no idea what happened.

Fun stuff! I watched the current ep of Leverage: Redemption and some recorded HGTV programs, took a nap (I’m blaming the weather for how many naps I’ve had to take lately), and read some fanfic. I also talked to my mom on the phone before my shower. (We generally talk every night, just telling each other about our days, no matter how little we did or how boring they were. *g*)

Temps started out at 42.3(F) and reached 53.8. It rained all day, though it was mostly drizzles and sprinkles. Still enough to make it impossible to do anything. Plus the overcast sky is soooo depressing.

Will today be better? As the Magic-8 Ball says, Don't count on it.

ETA: It was my niece L's birthday! She turned 35.

More tired today than yesterday

I didn't get much sleep and that cough medicine really knocked me for a loop (or something did. I was dizzy all day) I dropped something on my toe and cut it open in less than 5 minutes of being awake which set the tone of the day.

That said it was good. I didn't hang out much in the vendors room and breakfast was me and another local Pittsburgh guy (he teaches at the host school U of Pitt) talking up all the cool things to do. The two talks I got to go to today were good especially the latter one (I did skip the long business meeting today I just wasn't up to it) The latter was about diversity and inclusivity but on a different wavelength than the talks usually go. It was more about the faculty setting the tone (and from what she was saying I've been doing a lot of things right) You know that old chestnut of look to your left, look to your right, two of them won't be here at the end of this class. She talked about how things like that reenforce negative self thought, especially in at risk students.

My syllabus for example states right in it that yes this is hard but instead of talking failure rates etc I say here are some tools to help. I have some quote or two in there but she was talking about Einstein and I was reminded of these two statements by him Failure is success in progress and A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new. and might put them in there somewhere. Even on an exam where a student has failed but wrote me a little note as to why, I write them back with encouragement. I've been the student who was told I'd never amount to anything (9th grade lit teacher) or that I didn't belong there (4-6th grade science teacher) That is never going to be me and how I handle class. Now I'm more determined to be fair

I did cut out a little early and walked across to the Fort Pitt museum and toured it. Never been there or to the block house next to it, the only part of the original fort from the 1700s left. I did not know that William Penn (for whom PA is name) was a Quaker (that part I knew) and thought it was part of his religion to live in peace with the indigenous people and share with them. Too bad the Quakers didn't hold out better.

Nor did I know some of the last vestiges of the local tribes lost their land near the PA/NY border to build the kinzua dam, that their homes were burned to the ground when the kids were in school and their parents at work, some 600 displaced families. TWO years before I was born. TWO! Jesus.

If nothing else i know how the seeds of two stories, though I did have one story published along the lines of the new idea, what if the Quakers held power. Imagine it, a group that believed in sharing, peaceful cohabitiation and in my sabbatical research it was almost always a Quaker supporting the women doctors because they believe in equality in education (though not, I think it true equality but certainly heads and shoulders above others in that time)

I also won plushie spinal column today at the raffle and today's door dash was siam thai, pad kee mow that was delicious (but late, ah Pittsburgh traffic especially on a game night)

I have friday's fannish recs here for fannish 50 (and then off to bed because OMG I have to be on the bus by 7 AM. Shoot me) Speaking of which I really need to get the name/email of the young prof from TN who knew the steam company I got my dress from and stopped me today when she saw my Huskerdust charm so we could coo about them and Helluva Boss (and she likes witchcore)

I'd like to participate in more things in life. more writing. more roadtrips. More. More. There's never quite enough, is there?

No, not really

I'd like to do more. My boyfriend got me a headset. Or earphones. Over-the-ears. Point being, I'm glad because they make everything shut the hell up for a little bit, but I just got them. I wish I was more productive. Tonight, I'm mealprepping. Dinner. It's my off day and I have a week until school starts, so I might as well enjoy it, right?

My goal is posting more. Hanging out more. doing more.

I think I'm gonna start participating in fandomweekly again.

...I tended to enjoy grinding against the deadline, anyway.

I have to find gifts. But... me and bf are slowly getting there. Maybe the failing relationship is in front of my eyes and I'm just too stubborn to see it. Or maybe it's just be and my insecurities festering like rats on Kenny.

I got a Stan figure! And some posters. And some new clothes. It feels like a new me. More... cutesy. But more kitchy. More me. I drew today?

All the small things count for something.

Last Friday: I hit Price Chopper while I was downtown. I did three loads of laundry and changed kitty litter. I watched current eps of 9-1-1 and Leverage: Redemption, and read more in a book. Temps started out at 61.0(F) and reached 89.1. There was so much sun! The thunderstorms that were supposed to roll in about 1pm held off until after 9pm.

I'm a 100 year old cat

That's how I felt today strolling around in my science cat dress (from svaha) and cat sketchers. People LOVED my dress (me too). But I'm exhausted. This day was 10 days long. That said, it's a good first day of the conference. I found a product I'm in love with, a sheet with the systems printed on that you can lay over a dummy and get a real feel for the anatomy and it was cheap (especially sandwiched in between VR lab stuff that's 100K +)

I did have to take more breaks than usual (and very thankful I'm at the hotel. 10 years ago I would have stayed at a boutique hotel that made me happy and walk a few blocks. Now I want to be able to run to my room whenever I need to.

I had my presentation today. It was very interesting. Only 4 men came up to talk to me. Women on the other hand were all around me, thrilled by the topic (women doctors/women medical schools) and one came up with her poster for a different woman scientist that no one talks about and showed it to me on her phone. Another is a veteran telling me she's friends with the female thunderbird pilot who was just removed from the DOJs website thanks to Trump and how they're afraid they won't even be allowed to have their 50 anniversary of something women in the military (can't remember what) They understand the need to preserve this history at a time when it's actively being erased.

A younger woman stopped in (obviously a student) who was absolutely taken with the poster and my name (hers is one letter different but very different in pronounciation of the vowels). Later, an Armenian professor stopped in to tell me his daughter would love this and I asked if that was the young woman I was talking with. He was so excited I remembered her and then proceeded to tell me how his mother would have liked this presentation because she had wanted to be a doctor but back in the 50s wasn't allowed to go to school in Iraqi (because her father didn't want her to get her head turned by a non-Armenian)

I didn't get the foot traffic as some posters because it wasn't as applicable to teaching as others but I had women dragging over other women to see my work. That makes it worth it

The vendors were paying for cocktails tonight (I got an extra ticket from the imprinted sheet vendor because she liked me) and holy crap the hotel was milking it. My gin and tonics were literally just tumblers filled with gin and a whisper of tonic. I was buzzed by the time I got back up here and made bad doordash decisions. Okay not bad but average, so very very average. Disappointing. Hopefully tomorrow shall be better. I need to figure out who is open on Sundays because not all of them are.

Oh and I looked up what my cough medicine to see how it works and it's made from insect venom that numbs your lung's carina (the center of cough reflexes) and your throat. Well then. I didn't have bug venom on my bingo card

Forgot to mention yesterday i knocked yet another dexcom off early. Sigh. I knew it was getting loose so I brought another one but these are like 300$ each so if they keep falling off early it's going to be a problem.

New fic by Punk!

Run don't walk, as a new Stargate Atlantis fic by [personal profile] punk has just gone live! It's a collab where I did the podfic and cover art, and I love the story to bits. It's here on AO3, and here on Punk's DW.

In other news, I'm having fun inserting "mer" into various characters' names for Mermay art. so far, Merdurbot, Aquamer, and Steve MerGarrett. And I organised all my mer art into a series called just stick a mer in it (innuendo fully intended).

My Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia Diversifolia) is gradually getting more spectacular - visitors are starting to comment on it and ask what it is. Here's a pic.

A huge plant taller than the one-story unit behind it, with big lobed green leaves and many plate-sized yellow daisy flowers.

I took that photo yesterday - a lovely, sunny Autumn day. Today it's cloudy, cool and grey, and I'm going to make middle-eastern orange almond cake but as muffins, and will stew all my apples up as the small red ones are decidedly underwhelming but if I add in the 4 remaining Granny Smiths and some lemon juice, it'll be fine. Are you cooking anything interesting? Hugs to you all!

Had an almost perfectly normal day - food, nice long walk, some video games, picking up the cat, all with minimal painkillers and no need for the ones that knock me out! I'm getting a Good Grade in Surgery Recovery, something that is both normal to want and possible to achieve.

(Realistically, I think this just isn't a very painful procedure. The incisions are tiny and I wasn't under anesthesia for very long. Still, let me have this one. I don't enjoy being on heavy painkillers, so while I was prepared to grit my teeth through it I'm very happy I don't have to bother.)

Title: Please Mr Postman
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] Ultra
Fandom: Gilmore Girls
Pairing/Characters: Lane/Dave
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2855
Summary: When Dave goes off to California for college, he and Lane agree to do the long distance thing, largely through letters... and a lot of pop and rock music references, of course

I was so excited to get Lane/Dave! Loved all the fun music references and the letters were very them. :D

The Rory/Jess references in the original fic was already nice but it was a lovely delight to get a followup fic with giving them a chance at a happy ending too!

Condition Zebra

A Pod/Fic Collaboration! Fic by Punk. Podfic, audiobook, and cover by mific.

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Rating: Teen, for swears
Content notes: No standard notes apply.

Size: 8,650 words and 1 hour

Summary: John Sheppard, reaching new heights of not seeing it coming.

Punk's notes: In 2015, mific and I agreed that it'd be cool if I wrote a fic for her to podfic. I did, but then a lot of life happened and ten years passed before I was able to open it up again and edit it into shape with the help of panisdead. This story is much better because of her, and I'm so grateful for the time she put in across multiple betas. I'm also grateful for mific, who did a wonderful job with the podfic, as always, and that all three of us were still around to finish this project.

Title from my dad, who served on an aircraft carrier in the US Navy during the Vietnam War and told me about how "Set Condition Zebra throughout the ship" would come over the 1MC and all personnel would be expected to report to their assigned stations as quickly as practical to prepare the ship for combat.

In memory of ESS and SK.

mific's notes: When Punk reminded me about our plan to collaborate I was excited, and even more so after reading this excellent story. It's been enormous fun to podfic, both because the story itself is like the best of canon with added John and Rodney feels, and as Punk was open to features like sound effects. I've had a ball making the podfic and the cover art, and I hope you all love the story as much as I do.

Download or stream mific's podfic on AO3, where you can also read the fic, or stay put and read it here.

A/N: You can reblog this on Tumblr if you're feeling it, and if you want to know why Rodney was shouting about pigs, he was quoting Robert Heinlein: "Never attempt to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and annoys the pig."
